How to Use Acrylic Skins in Artwork

As a full-time acrylic painter, I use a great deal of paint in my artwork.  After a painting session, there is usually paint left on my palette that can be reused or saved. I enjoy creating acrylic skins with the leftover paint.  I can add the skins to a painting or create a piece using just the skins.

I often add mediums to acrylic paint to extend the drying time.  In the video below, I demonstrate how easy it is to remove the skin from a silicone mat or palette paper.

The first and second examples were dried on a silicone mat.  Matte medium was added to the acrylic paint, so it will dry with a matte finish.

The third example has gloss gel medium mixed into the paint, which causes it to dry clear and shiny.

At the end of the video, I show a few pieces created using the skins.  Two of the pieces were created exclusively with skins, while the others have skins added to give them more depth and interest.
